Three ways to speed up your computer

speedometerWe get several calls every week that someone’s computer is running slowly.  Usually, there’s a few things that we do that aren’t difficult for any end user to do.  In fact, some need the end user to do them because we can’t.  This article will cover some of the basic steps we take to speed up a computer; its not complete and if you don’t feel comfortable, always consult a professional.

The first is universal: clean up your desktop.  If you have documents on your desktop, put them in your Documents folder.  If you want to organize them, create folders and place your documents appropriately.  Do this with anything you don’t need on your desktop.  When you log into your computer, it has to load every icon and check to make sure that any links work; this slows down the boot process.  While one or two icons doesn’t pose an issue, a full desktop can incur a significant slowdown.  We also empty the Recycle Bin to free up space.  Please, don’t use the Recycle Bin to store files.

The second is to speed up email.  When were called and told that someones computer is slow, we often find out that its only slow opening Outlook.  The biggest reason for this is that people don’t empty their trash email.  It is common for people to use this as a place to store emails; please do NOT store valuable in the trash folder.  It is for trash.  When Outlook loads, it has to load every email including those in the trash.  By removing these, it minimizes the number of emails it has to handle and starts up faster.  It also helps to delete old, unnecessary emails.

As a technician, we typically don’t do either of the above.  We can sit with you and help you figure out what goes where, but it requires knowledge of what is important.

The third is something you can do is don’t download programs that help speed up your computer.  While there are some programs that work, many wind up slowing you down.  As a rule of thumb: the more things that you have running, the slower you should expect it to be.  If you’re interested in having software speed up your computer automatically contact us and we can guide you through getting and installing the right software for your need.
